What do Leopard Sharks Eat?

Leopard sharks are bottom feeders, meaning they graze and hunt for food along the bottom of the ocean. They mostly live on the west coast of the United States in sandy or muddy bays, usually in water around 20 feet deep.

So what do leopard sharks eat? They feed on small ocean animals and invertebrates such as crabs, octopi, shrimp, clams, and small fish. Their mouths are on the bottom of their bodies, making it easy to suction up food as they swim along the ocean floor. Think of them like an ocean floor vacuum cleaner!

What is the average leopard shark size? They’re smaller than you may think! They only grow to be 6 feet long and weigh around 40 pounds. Females are larger than males, but leopard sharks are generally much littler than an average shark.

They’re a slow-moving species, preferring to move slowly along the ocean floor rather than speed along. Leopard sharks have lots of time! And lots of little ocean creatures to munch on.

Are Leopard Sharks Dangerous?

We’ve learned what these little ocean creatures like to eat, and where they hang out, and how big they get. When we think of sharks, the question of safety usually comes to mind. So, are leopard sharks dangerous?

The short answer is no. Leopard sharks do not typically pose a threat to humans. They have a reputation of being relatively calm and docile, and not aggressive towards people. There have even been reports of leopard sharks swimming alongside scuba divers and surfers!

Although they may not be dangerous, you should always stay far away from wild animals in their natural habitat. Give them lots of space to do their thing! Observe leopard sharks from afar or have an immersive experience with the RC Swimming Leopard Shark!

  • Did you know that sharks have more than five senses? In addition to the senses we humans have (touch, taste, sight, hearing, and feel), all fish have a sixth sense. This sense is called the lateral line. It helps them sense pressure changes underwater. Sharks also have a seventh sense that allows them to detect electromagnetic waves, which may indicate that there is food nearby!
  • Leopard sharks are not a migratory species, meaning they stay in the same ocean area all year round. They’re homebodies, who can blame them?!
  • Leopard sharks don’t actually resemble leopards! Leopard sharks are covered in a series of dark splotches instead of spots. People often confuse them with zebra sharks, another species of similar size and pattern.
